All summer, Seth has been floating an idea to get Donald Trump to drop out of the presidential race. He (like many other people) thinks that Trump doesn’t actually want the job of being president, he just wants the prestige and the title. So Seth created Chicago President, a scripted series on NBC in which Donald Trump would get to play the president, but of course it would be set in Chicago. Since Donald Trump still hasn’t responded to this generous offer of a guaranteed hit show, Seth decided to change his tactics. Continue reading
As we mentioned, the late night hosts are back in full force now that the Olympics are over. Without international athletics to distract us, we’re back to focusing on that other intense competition, the presidential race. Seth Meyers has become our go-to late night host for political humor, and he did not disappoint with his first “A Closer Look” segment since the break. In it, Seth Meyers ran down all of the Trump campaign shenanigans of the last two weeks and man, there were a lot! And some of the stuff (like the “Second Amendment People”) comments seemed like they happened a lot longer ago, didn’t they? Or maybe it’s just that the sheer length and volume of this campaign has warped our sense of time. Continue reading
For months now, Seth Meyers has been trying to convince Donald Trump to quit running for the actual presidency and instead star in his very own NBC television show, which of course is called Chicago President. While initially Seth figured this would satiate Donald’s need for constant attention and ratings, last night Seth realized that Chicago President would also solve another of Donald Trump’s possible problems: that he’s not nearly as wealthy as he claims to be. Seth figures that the main reason that Donald Trump refuses to release his tax returns is that he’s actually broke, pointing to the recent picture of him eating KFC with a fork and knife as proof that his wealth has disappeared. Starring in a hit NBC show would help to alleviate some of that financial stress, Seth reasons, and to further entice Donald to take his offer, Seth Continue reading
This past week, Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones made headlines after she received an absolute onslaught of racist tweets and decided to share and report the trolls who were hurling the abuse at her rather than sweep it under the rug. Throughout the week, Leslie received support from fans (famous and non-famous) but initially got very little response from Twitter itself. Finally, Twitter responded by banning the accounts of several of the worst trolls, including Milo Yiannopoulous, who instigated much of the harassment she received (read more about that over on Vox). Last night, Leslie appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about the whole experience. Continue reading
This week, it seems like the only things happening in the world of entertainment are Pokemon and Ghostbusters. The cast members of Ghostbusters are making the final rounds before it premiers this weekend, and Kate McKinnon did her duty by stopping to visit Seth Meyers on Late Night. While most of her summer has been spent travelling around the world to make sure that people go and see Ghostbusters, Kate also told Seth about a summer project that she attempted to complete. As it turns out, Kate is not much for woodworking and her cat is not much for baths. Continue reading
Maya and Marty star Maya Rudolph popped by Late Night with Seth Meyers last night. The two former SNL-ers have a fun, easy chemistry with each other that makes them entertaining to watch together, regardless of the topic. Luckily, Maya had a fun topic to talk about: when President Obama was on The Tonight Show last week, he used her dressing room! Apparently Maya and Marty shoots on the same floor in Rockefeller Center as Jimmy Fallon’s show, so they co-opted Maya’s dressing room for a couple of days for the president. Maya left Obama a note and Continue reading
The late night wars of the Leno/Letterman era have largely cooled off. You just don’t hear about the current crop of late night hosts having any kind of animosity towards each other. Sure, they’re still competing for ratings, but that seems to be more of a concern for the network bosses than the guys who are sitting behind the desks, and even they don’t seem to care about promoting rivals. Case in point: Seth Meyers welcomed James Corden to Late Night with Seth Meyers last night. James is in New York because Continue reading
What do you get for the guy that has everything. If you’re looking for a gift for David Spade, apparently murder weapons are in vogue. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Spade told Seth about the bloody knife that his brother gave him for Christmas. If the gift wasn’t bad enough, it was at the center of an uncomfortable airport incident as well.
Michael Ian Black is a very busy guy. He has a new comedy special coming out called Noted Expert, which debuts on Epix on May 13. He co-stars in both The Jim Gaffigan Show (returning to TVLand on June 19) and Another Period (Comedy Central, June 15) and he’s just signed on to Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, which will debut on Netflix sometime in 2017. Continue reading
Hands down our favorite current Weekend Update guest is Kenan Thompson’s David Ortiz (a.k.a. Big Papi). There’s just such a joy to his impression and Big Papi is such a goofball anyway that it totally and completely works. Plus, the way that Kenan says “mofongo” gets us every time. So, imagine our delight when Kenan broke out his Ortiz impression on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Not only did he adopt the accent, but he also brought some wonderful new products, like Mohawks, Slow-Ass Panda, and the new dating site, Go Outside. Continue reading
Ricky Gervais’ new movie, Special Correspondents, will be released this Friday, April 29, on Netflix. The plot sounds perfectly suited to Gervais, as it has a radio journalist and his technician (Eric Bana and Gervais) fake their own kidnapping and file their stories from New York. Ricky has been making the rounds promoting the movie, but he’s ended up spending just as much time talking about this summer’s release of David Brent: Life on the Road. Seth Meyers talked to Ricky about reprising his famous role from The Office, asking him whether he thought there was the possibility that it might ruin the “perfect” ending of the show. Naturally, Ricky wasn’t worried at all. Continue reading
Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are out promoting their new movie, Keanu. That doesn’t mean that people don’t want to hear about their hilarious Comedy Central series, Key &Peele. Unfortunately Continue reading
If you’re regular readers of fourthmic, you will have noticed that we often lament the way that late night television seems to be seeking the next viral video more than they are worried about making a television show that stands on its own and is meant to be watched late at night (or very early in the morning). We’re not saying anything new when we say that the various games and other gimmicks favored by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon are meant to appeal to YouTube viewers as much as (or more than) live audiences. And we suppose that’s alright, but with nearly every other show following suit, it adds another layer to the late night competition. Continue reading
You may have noticed that there was no new episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday night. There was very good reason for that! Seth’s wife, Alexi Ashe, gave birth to their son on Easter Sunday. After only taking one day off, Seth was back at it on Tuesday. He started the show off by telling the adorable story of his son’s birth, which was a very stereotypically New York story including a doorman who’d seen it all before and an Uber driver who definitely had not.
Seth named his son Ashe Olsen. Ashe is his wife’s maiden name, of course, and Olsen is Seth’s mom’s maiden name. And yes, Continue reading
Tina Fey’s new movie, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, comes out today. We’ll probably go check it out at some point – it looks fun and she seems to have good chemistry with Margot Robbie. Tina’s been all over the place to promote the film and last night she stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers to chat with her former SNL co-worker (the two were co-head-writers in the 2005/2006 season). Although Whiskey Tango Foxtrot takes place in Afghanistan, they filmed it in New Mexico. Seth’s wife is from New Mexico, so he and Tina had some shared experiences. While we were disappointed that there were no Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul references (which is what we think of whenever we hear about New Mexico), Tina’s spa story was pretty funny.
