Back in the day when Donald Trump’s candidacy for president seemed like a big joke that brought along high ratings but no actual legitimacy, John Oliver refused to cover it (or even really talk about it). Instead, he did long form pieces about issues that did not get nearly as much press as the latest crazy thing that Donald Trump just said. As Trump slowly gained traction, however, John Oliver had no choice but to cover it. While the latest episode of Last Week Tonight was technically focused on the Democratic National Convention, it ended up giving John Oliver another chance to unleash on Donald Trump, thanks to Trump’s inexplicable comments about Khzir and Ghazala Khan, who spoke at the DNC about the death of their son, Army Captain Humayun Khan. John abandoned all attempts at humor and let his disgust at Trump’s comments stand alone:
The main takeaway from these two weeks is that, incredibly, we may be on the brink of electing such a damaged, sociopathic narcissist that the simple presidential duty of comforting the families of fallen soldiers may actually be beyond his capabilities. And I genuinely did not think that that was a part of the job that someone could be bad at.
