Halfway through Maron‘s fourth season, we wrote about how impressed we were with the decision to completely blow up the status quo and take the show (and the character “Marc Maron”) to a dark place. As it turns out, Maron still has the ability to surprise us, as he just announced on his podcast that the fourth season finale (airing this Wednesday on IFC) will actually be the series finale.
On WTF with Marc Maron, Marc made it clear that the decision to end the show was entirely his own:
I’ve decided that this is it. It’s done. There’s ways to do more, but this was the vision. This season was the season. And I couldn’t be more thrilled about how it came out, how all four seasons came out. I think you’ll see that we wrapped the story up in the best way possible, and I just feel like it’s done. And I’m thrilled about it.
We really respect that decision. It’s so easy for shows to just keep on going because the network says they can, but it takes real clarity and vision to end things when the story feels right. Or, as Maron put it, “Why take a good thing and make it garbage just because you can?”
We’re so happy that Maron got to end things exactly how he wanted to and we can’t wait to see what he does next.
