Mike Birbiglia Talks Fatherhood and His New Movie with Jimmy Kimmel

Comedian Mike Birbiglia stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to promote his new movie, Don’t Think Twice. Before they got into that, though, Mike and Jimmy had to discuss fatherhood, as both recently became fathers to little girls. Before his own daughter was born, Mike went to Jimmy’s house to try and get a sense of what fatherhood would be, but he didn’t quite get the full picture thanks to Jimmy’s baby nurse. Things definitely seem easier when someone can just swoop in and do all the non-fun stuff!

After the baby talk was out of the way, Mike and Jimmy talked about Mike’s new movie, Don’t Think Twice. The film boasts an all-star cast of some of our favorite comedians. Along with Mike himself, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Chris Gethard, Kate Micucci, and Tami Sagher star as a troupe of improv comedians in New York. One of them gets a big break on a Saturday Night Live-style sketch show, while the rest are left to deal with their jealousy and feelings of being left behind. It sounds like a really great premise and Mike’s enthusiasm about the project sold it for us even more. He’s clearly very proud of the film (which he wrote, directed, and starred in) and it premiered at SXSW to great reviews.

This summer he’ll be touring across the country on a bus with the entire cast to show it to more people. In addition to pop-up screenings of the film, they’ll also be giving free improv classes hosted by Liz Allen, who is an improv coach in the film and real life. The stops include improv comedy clubs like iO Chicago and Planet Ant in Detroit, plus more (you can see the whole list here). The film will make its theatrical debut on July 22 in New York City and will hopefully get wider release after that.

We’re personally crossing our fingers that they’ll announce a Just For Laughs special screening for the end of July. We don’t think we’ll be able to make it to any of the other cities this summer and hey, we like improv up north, too!
